Hearty Spaghetti Sauce

I had bought a lot of Taste of  Home's magazines at a yard sale and found this recipe in one of them.  This recipe now replaces my other spaghetti sauce recipe, as we all agreed this one is much better.  It says to put Italian sausage in it, along with the meatballs, but both grocery stores were out of Italian sausage and I didn't feel like looking further for it. So, I put hamburger meat in the sauce instead. I am going to leave the recipe just like this, as it was so good and having to buy Italian sausage is just another ingredient. Here is the original recipe. Below is how I cooked it for our family.

1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1 cup crushed saltines or Ritz crackers
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon  parsley
1 pound ground beef

Mix together and roll into one inch balls. Cook in a sauce pan. Remove from pan and set aside.

1 pound ground beef
1 cup onion, chopped
1 cup  green pepper, chopped
2 cans (28 ounces each) diced tomatoes, drained
2 cans (8 ounces each) tomato sauce
1 tsp. beef bullion
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 teaspoons each dried basil, oregano and parsley flakes
2 teaspoons sugar
Salt and pepper to taste

In the same pan as you cooked the meatballs, cook the hamburger, bell pepper and onion until tender. Drain meat and return to pan.  Add the remaining ingredients and then the meatballs. Bring to a gentle boil and them turn down. Let simmer 2-3 hours.
